Bringing DNA Data Storage to the Classroom: BioSistemika inspires future innovators

On Thursday, 2 April, PEARL-DNA partner BioSistemika engaged with young students during a Career Day event at the primary school OŠ Vižmarje – Brod. The session introduced 7th-grade students to the emerging field of DNA data storage and offered insights into the career path of a biotechnologist working at the intersection of biology and digital technologies.

The presentation aimed to make complex scientific concepts accessible and relevant to a younger audience. BioSistemika’s experts explained how DNA, beyond its biological role, can be used as a medium for storing digital information, highlighting its potential for long-term, sustainable data storage solutions.

The students demonstrated strong interest and curiosity throughout the session, actively engaging with the topic and asking thoughtful questions about both the technology and career opportunities in biotechnology.

To conclude the activity, the students participated in an interactive challenge. BioSistemika had encoded a secret message into a sequence of DNA nucleotides, and the students, working in groups, were tasked with decoding it. This hands-on exercise allowed them to apply what they had learned in a collaborative and problem-solving setting. The first group to successfully decode the message was rewarded with a chocolate prize, adding a playful and motivating element to the learning experience.

This outreach activity reflects PEARL-DNA’s commitment to raising awareness of DNA data storage and inspiring the next generation to explore careers in science and innovation.
