The environmental impact of digital infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important concern because data centres require vast amounts of energy to operate and maintain, which contributes significantly to global carbon emissions. At the same time, traditional storage devices have limited lifespans, leading to frequent replacement and material waste. PEARL-DNA addresses these challenges by exploring DNA as a sustainable alternative for data storage.
DNA-based storage offers several environmental advantages: It does not require continuous energy input to maintain stored data, it can be preserved at room temperature, and it has an exceptionally long lifespan, reducing the need for replacement. By minimising energy consumption and material use, DNA storage has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of digital systems. Through its research and development efforts, PEARL-DNA aims to demonstrate that high-performance data storage can also be environmentally responsible.
