PEARL-DNA: The next generation of digital storage

For decades, digital storage technologies have relied on physical media such as magnetic disks and semiconductor-based devices. While these technologies have evolved significantly, they are increasingly constrained by physical limitations. DNA presents a compelling alternative. As the natural carrier of genetic information, DNA can store vast amounts of data in an extremely compact and stable form.

Scientists have already demonstrated that DNA can retain information for thousands of years under the right conditions. PEARL-DNA is taking this concept further by developing a complete, end-to-end DNA-based data storage platform, which includes encoding digital data into DNA sequence, synthesising DNA at high speed, storing DNA safely and efficiently as well as retrieving and decoding the stored data.

A key objective of the project is to significantly improve the speed and scalability of DNA data writing to enable practical applications beyond laboratory experiments. By integrating advances in biotechnology, information theory and engineering, PEARL-DNA is laying the foundation for a new era of data storage, one where biology and digital technology converge.
